From an Inkedblog reader:
"I love your site. I'm pretty obsessed with tattoos. I only have one, but I look at photos of them for hours, contemplating what next.
I know neotribal style was a huge trend in the 90s -- when I got mine. In a real typical place, my lower back. And now we have the backlash, beause SO many people got them unthinkingly. The part of me that is still attached to trendiness is the part that goes -- cover it! People think it's lame! But here's the thing.
I picked the tribal design I did because it is meaningful to me. So, to me, it transcends the superficiality of the trend. The design resembles an angel with unfurling, swirling wings. Though abstract, when I tell people how to look at it they see it too. I didn't WANT to get a realistic tattoo of an angel. I was afraid I would tire of the image; and I personally prefer bold, black tattoos with a strong abstract design element. I wanted something flowing and symbolic, whose meaning could change over time. The concept of having an angel "watching my back" is very personal to me -- so personal that I am glad that if a stranger asks me what my tattoo means, I can just say, "Nothing, it's just a design I liked." Because it's none of their business. And while tattoos can be fashion and beauty statements, they are also spiritual and represent a rite of passage in the wearer's life.
So -- just because there are lots of dudes out there who get tribal armbands for no real reason, and chicks who just slap a tribal over their ass because it's "sexy"...don't assume that's true of all of us!
too true. my best friend and her other friend got matching tats tribal. and she got killed by a drunk driver while she was 5 an half months prego so now my other friend has simething to remember by for ever it does not matter what the reson for the tat it simbolozes an event in your life, no matterwhat that event might be.

I wanted to give the same defence to some Celtic tattoos. I have a beautiful Celtic cross on my arm. But it also has 4 runes, one in each section of the cross. One rune represents a happy family. One rune is supposed to increase memory, the 3rd rune is to increase my luck, and the 4th is a bind rune I made with my daughters initials.
The funny thing about trendy tattoos. I have wanted a tattoo since highschool. In 10th grade (1986) I just knew I wanted something in Japanese script. But then everybody had those. SO of course I couldnt get that. So went every Idea for a tattoo ive had. In fact even 2 years ago when I finally came up with the rune idea and the celtic cross to go with it, I saw someone with a similar one and almost decided not to get it, but at some point you have to say screw it, just because my custom idea corresponds with the current trend shouldnt mean I cant go with it. In fact What I realized was that I was actually, all those years, letting the current trend dictate which tattoos I didnt get.

i don't mind tribal tatts, but i really dig them when a person dedicates a large portion of their body to the design.... like say their whole leg or like the samoan pe'a...
the smaller the tribal piece is, the less i like it.

Just as we shouldn’t be judged for our ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or various other superficial qualities neither should we be judged for the tattoos we choose to place on our skin. It’s such an individual and personal process who’s to say which ones are better, more hip, or more worthy of praise? As with anything I hope I am judged for who I am on the inside not what’s on the outside.
As with any scene or movement it’s about staying true to yourself, following your own heart.

Doesn't matter what you get, as long as it's got meaning for you. I got mine to remember a very difficult time in my life, and how I got through it, to always remind me that I am "strong like bull"
I'll never forget the time I had it done, where I was and what I was doing. I like it when people ask about it, it gives me a chance to recapture what I was feeling at the time.

i agree that if it has meaning to you, trend & what anyone else thinks doesn't matter. i have 2 tattoos (unrelated) on my lower back. the first i got in 1995; the second, in 2001. was i following a trend? idk, but i also don't care. i always feel that when you think of a tattoo you want, it seems that it only fits in one place; as though it "tells" you where it's supposed to go. and that's where they were supposed to go.
i still like tribal designs. any possible idea in tattooing can be overdone, in my opinion - it's what the person wearing it likes, feels, that matters.

Hello... I'm certain that there are other tattoo shops out there who do this, but I found a place called Black Dragon here near Milwaukee, Wisconsin that does alterations on tribal tattoos. One design that they've done has a tribal design in varying shadings of blue, to make it seem 3D, with a dolphin in the center. They have a few of these, so I'd imagine that they can help the customer with designing something unique like this that also satisfies the customer's desire to have a tribal tattoo. Just food for thought.
much love,

I think it's possible for any one idea for a tattoo to become overdone and cliche, I've seen thousands of butterflies, dragons, and koi. Tats are personal expressions, and if a tribal is what you like and wish to have on your body, then what anyone else thinks or says is meaningless. If you're getting tattoos to impress someone or to keep up with a current trend, you're getting them for the wrong reasons, and any design you choose will be pretty uninspiring.

the thing with tattoos are that yeah a lot of people just get whats in fashion...but even they had to endure their own pain to go get it...Thats why it makes me piss raving mad when someone in the streets say 'oh u have a butterfly too?' argh. smack! only kidding..i dont hit em. And no i dont have anything thats popular, but i still feel the need to stick up for the cause!

Personally, I think (and have always thought, even since they were trendy) that tribal tattoos are lame, unless you are Polynesian. That's like getting a shamrock tattoo if you're not irish or something. Dunno.
